Column repair begins by addressing the deterioration where concrete has cracked and spalled, exposing the reinforcing rebar. This exposure can lead to corrosion, which weakens the column’s structural integrity. Immediate repair is essential to prevent potential failure. The process starts with the removal of loose concrete, treatment of corroded rebar, and application of high-strength repair mortar to restore the column’s shape and stability. Once the initial repair is complete, the column is reinforced with HardTape 600 Bi-Directional galvanized steel cord woven tape, which is applied using specialized mortar. This HardTape 600 wrap significantly enhances the column’s load-bearing capacity, providing increased strength and durability while protecting it from future damage and corrosion.
On columns where both vertical and horizontal strengthening is required but the bidirectional does not provide a sufficient increase in the capacity, two layers of the HardTape 600 can also be used and will provide increased capacities for the component. Various mortar coatings can be applied, depending on the desired finish once the column is reinforced and strengthened.
Concrete columns are essential structural components that bear loads and provide stability in buildings and infrastructures. Despite their critical role, concrete columns can fail due to various factors. Understanding these failure modes is crucial for preventing structural damage and ensuring safety.
Buckling occurs when a column deforms or bends under compressive forces, leading to a sudden sideways failure.
Compression failure happens when the material of the column is crushed under excessive load.
Shear failure occurs when the column's material fails along a plane due to shear stresses, causing a sliding failure.
